LETTER: Support call for Early Day Motion

Suicide was decriminalised in 1961, yet coroners today must use the Criminal Standard of Proof, '˜beyond reasonable doubt', to reach a conclusion of suicide.

The current law is offensive, perpetuates stigma, offends those bereaved by suicide and obscures the true number of lives lost to suicide each year.

Our charity is leading a campaign to change the law so that the Civil Standard of Proof, the ‘balance of probability’, is required, pressing for change to the Coroners and Justice Act 2009.

An Early Day Motion in support has been tabled in Parliament by Norman Lamb MP. I urge people to write to their MP asking them to sign in support.
