Is Littlehampton’s sewerage system up to taking on more capacity?

Have your say

I have been reading the excellent work by the late Mr Wilf Daggett about the history of Wick.

I note from his records that in 1902 a Mr Joseph Robinson wrote to the Littlehampton News explaining that the town was in danger of flooding because the authorities had ignored advice about the limited capacity of the sewers, which could not cope with the large amounts of stormwater.

May I venture to suggest some 114 years later that we are reliant on Southern Water knowing exactly what the capacity of today’s arrangements are and what is required to be done before anything extra is plugged into them. When development proposals come forward it is important that the cost of the infrastructure required to accommodate additional demand is made clear at an early stage.

Currently when planning consent is given to any of the thousands of extra houses the Government is demanding, Arun supply a condition stating that the arrangements for sewerage must be agreed between the developer and Southern Water before development proceeds. Perhaps that needs to change to before planning permission is granted so that councillors can be satisfied at an early stage about the arrangements. These are crucial matters as those who have suffered flooding in Littlehampton will testify.
