As we rightly commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, we should be aware that in a very few years’ time we won’t be able to shake by the hand or look in the eye – or say thank you to – veterans of the other war that changed our world forever.
Which is why we must not waste the opportunities provided by the last major anniversaries when Second World War veterans and those who also served will still be with us in some numbers to say thank you to and to raise awareness for this and future generations.
The 70th anniversary of VE Day – May 8, 2015 – is at the very least as significant as the First World War anniversary and it must not be allowed to pass without ceremony. VJ Day 70, on August 15, 2015, must not be neglected, either.
The Government has spent £50million on the First World War commemorations and similar consideration must be given to VE Day 70.
