Cycle lane failed

Have your say

Whilst I sympathise with Barry Mishon’s suggestion of a separate cycle lane for Adur Ferry Bridge (letters, Herald, July 31), I should remind you that this scheme was recently tried on the path that runs between Widewater Lagoon and the beach.

Some cyclists assumed that they could use maximum speed along their lane with impunity, forgetting that a child, a dog, someone crossing the path, or avoiding a child or dog, could step into their path, and that you cannot hear a cyclist coming up behind you.

After a number of potentially serious incidents, the scheme had to be abandoned (and the markings and notices altered at public expense).

Now that the cyclists no longer have a right of way, at least most of them make allowances for pedestrians.
