A YOUNG artist said she was ‘honoured’ and ‘surprised’ to receive an award and a cheque for a painting of her sister.

The National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS) held its annual Young Arts award presentation on Monday at the Steyning Centre.

A big crowd turned out to watch Steyning Grammar School student Jennifer Nash accept the award for a unique painting of her sister, Elizabeth.

Jennifer, of Ashington, said: “It’s just a hobby, but I really love doing it. I’ve had really positive feedback for this painting and I think it’s quite different.”

The 18-year-old used water-based oils to create the portrait and added newspaper in the background for texture.

“It’s about my sister overcoming her anxiety,” she said.

Jennifer has started Art Foundation at Brighton City College for fun until she is ready to pursue a career in osteopathy.

To mark the society’s 10th anniversary, the national chairman of NADFAS, June Robinson, attended the event to congratulate Jennifer on her work that was originally submitted as a school assignment.

“I think the painting is absolutely beautiful and stunning,” said June.

“The arts generate a huge amount of income and enrich people’s lives. I think a life without art is not full enough and it’s essential that we encourage the young to enjoy the arts, and NADFAS gives out grants to young adults and people who keep the arts and crafts alive.”

Jennifer received a certificate and a cheque to go towards her art career.

“I’m really happy and surprised,” added Jennifer.
