East Worthing and Shoreham’s MP has welcomed more funding to help fill potholes in West Sussex.

The Government announced a new Pothole Action Fund, which will give local authorities in England £50m a year over the next five years, with West Sussex County Council set to receive £841,000.

Using an estimate of £53 per pothole this money could fill 15,868 defects across the county.

Tim Loughton said: “The state of our roads is consistently raised with me by local residents and remains a great source of frustration for drivers.

“This new funding is welcome news for families and businesses in East Worthing and Shoreham rely on our roads to get around. I’ve been campaigning for a long time for greater investment in road repairs, and I’m encouraging the council to make full use of their allocation locally.

“I am glad that the Government is investing both nationally and locally to improve the standard of our local roads. It shows that we are delivering on our commitment to invest in infrastructure to attract businesses and secure Britain’s future.”

Last week Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “I know how important well-maintained roads are to people across the country. Almost every journey starts and ends on a local road, so the Government is giving councils £250 million specifically to tackle the blight of potholes in their area.

“This is just one part of our unprecedented investment in local road maintenance over the next 5 years. We are giving a record £6 billion to local authorities in England that will improve journeys across the regions.”
