A number of West Sussex events have been organised to mark the national Dementia Awareness week, starting on Monday May 15.

Dementia currently affects about 14,000 people in West Sussex, and the figure is expected to reach 18,000 by 2025.

Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for adult social care and health, said: “With these growing figures, it’s more important than ever that we all become more knowledgeable about dementia. Dementia Awareness Week plays an important part in helping people to understand the condition.”

Events being held during the week include:

• Tea at Tangmere on Monday May 16 from 10.30am to 12.30pm hosted by Chichester & Bognor Positive Thinkers at Dementia Support

• Reminisce With Us event at Worthing Library on Tuesday May 17 from 10.30am to 12.30pm

• A walking football taster drop-in session at Crawley Library on Saturday May 21 from 1-4pm

• Launch of dementia friendly swimming at Crawley K2 on Thursday May 19

• Stands at Gatwick’s North and South terminals during the week

• Singing and creative events as part of Chichester’s Living Well with Dementia Festival which continues during the week

• Mid-Sussex Dementia Friendly Group at Warden Park Academy on Monday May 16

• Horsham Carers Group at New House Farm, with Cream Tea and entertainment - Tuesday May 17 2.30pm to 4.30pm

The county council is doing its bit to help West Sussex become a dementia friendly county by supporting local Dementia Action Alliances and encouraging people to sign up to become a dementia friend.

It is also becoming a member of the national Dementia Action Alliance.

Dementia Action Alliances can be found in Worthing, Adur, Chichester, Bognor, Crawley, Horsham and Haywards Heath to support local people.
