HARVEST has been a key theme for junior pupils at Shoreham College in the last week.

Children learned about vegetables that have eyes, ears, hands and hearts in the Harvest Festival, which was led by the Rev Terry Stratford.

Each class contributed to the service and supported the Emmaus Community in Portslade by donating food and creating ‘vegetable heads’ for display in the charity’s café.

Having reflected on sharing and given thanks for all the harvest crops, the children in year six wrote a collaborative harvest poem as part of National Poetry Day on Thursday.

Mrs Kathryn Stokes, head of juniors, said: “The children are always enthusiastic to learn about harvest time and to share their thoughts and reflections on those in need.

“The opportunity to include poetry has this year allowed for great levels of creativity too.”

Here is the poem:

Harvest

Gathering gifts for the harvest festival

We thank you God for the food we eat

But look upon our loaded basket

Humble gifts or a delicious treat?

I am not just an apple

I have watched life go by me as I have hung on a single branch waiting to be picked.

I am not just a banana

I am a moon shaped fruit that is great for giving you a boost like a rocket for a busy day.

I am not just an orange

I am a jewel full of flavour.

I am not just a can of tomato soup

I am a flood of juicy goodness warming heats across the world.

I am not just a potato

I am a round brown vegetable which breaks through soil to be roasted into salty chips or creamy mash.

I am not just an oat

I am your energy for the day.

I am not just an aubergine

I am a bodyguard to stop villainous fast food!

I am not just a lemon

I am a squirt of sour goodness.

I am not just a grape

I am a juicy oval of goodness.

I am not just a carrot

I am a spear of flavour.

I’m not just a harvest basket,

I’m a Shoreham College harvest basket.
