There are delays on Long Furlong in Findon due to an oil spillage caused by a collision.

The accident happened on the A280 northbound between Long Furlong, Findon and the A24.

According to Sussex Police, they were contacted at 3.30pm about a collision between a car and a van which had caused an oil spillage.

The spill is believed to have stretched for 50 metres – the length of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

It is understood that the collision ruptured the tank or fuel line of one of the vehicles, causing the spill.

Long Furlong was closed by police until highways authority engineers arrived at 5pm and cleared the oil slick.

The road has since reopened but the accident has led to queuing traffic, with West Sussex Highways telling road users to expect delays.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said they were contacted by the ambulance service at just after 16.20pm about the collision.

They dispatched three fire engines from Worthing Fire Station, including one designed to help remove people trapped in their vehicle.

No road users were found trapped, so the firefighters left the scene at 16.35pm with the ambulance service and police still in attendance.

Police said the drivers involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene by paramedics.

This follows yesterday’s motorbike crash on Long Furlong.
