RUNNERS and supporters enjoyed a ‘thrilling and historic day’ at the 30th anniversary of the primary school walking races.
The event, promoted by Steyning Athletic Club, saw primary schools from around the area take part in a series of races on October 12.
This year, Steyning Primary School retained the title they won in 2012, and have repeatedly won throughout the 30 years.
Organiser Malcolm Geal said: “The 30th anniversary of the primary schools walks produced another thrilling series of races in the grounds of Steyning Grammar School.
“The historic and unique races didn’t see Steyning have it all their own way and they were challenged hard by Ashurst Primary School, who literally walked away with the Rising Stars trophies for both boys and girls for making the greatest improvement year-on-year.
“In perfect racing conditions, athletes in years three to six from Steyning, Ashurst, Upper Beeding, The Towers Convent and Jolesfield primary schools keenly contested four walking races and one running relay, all of which produced some of the closest finishes and most exciting races in the history of the event and fully justified the decision to rearrange it after it had to be cancelled earlier in 2013.
“The races produced some excellent individual and team performances, but no-one went home empty-handed as all athletes justifiably received a finishers medal.”
