A STUDENT motorsport team funded by Northbrook College’s Shoreham campus is celebrating a hard-earned third place in its latest race at Thruxton.
The student engineers work alongside professional driver Shane Kelly as part of Team Northbrook Racing.
The aim is for the team to gain experience of working with racing cars first hand and develop an understanding of how a race team is structured.
Recently, the students have been competing with former Formula 1, 3 and 4 cars and have even had the chance to test their car against historic motors such as James Hunt’s winning F1 car.
Speaking about the team’s Thruxton success, driver Shane Kelly said: “I was very happy with the speed and set up of the car and the hard work the students had put in over the winter had definitely paid off.
“To come to such a big circuit and beat experienced teams will make top race teams in motorsport look at Team Northbrook and be impressed with the standard the student engineers and mechanics are working at. “
Race engineer Jeremy Dimos, 26, from Goring said it was a fantastic feeling to achieve third place.
“It was stressful, exciting and extremely rewarding but also exhausting,” he said.
Jeremy said the result had left the team feeling vindicated for all the hard work they had put in preparing the car.
Nathan Tupper, 20, from Petersfield, said he was proud of how the team had regrouped following a disappointing first day in qualifying.
“We were there bright and early on Sunday to make sure that every nut and bolt had been checked and nothing had been missed, ” he said.
“To watch the race was nervy, as positions were changing all around Shane, but as the time ran down, third place was ours.”
Chassis engineer Tom Hoare, 19, from Worthing said the team had learned that race weekends were not all smooth sailing and that concentration would be key to the team’s success.
“It was a good result that we are very happy with, but now we know that we can achieve greater results in the championship,” he said.
“Working on the race car is highly rewarding and great to see your work achieve good results.”
TNR’s next big race weekend is at Brands Hatch on September 13 and 14.
