ADUR Ferry Bridge is to close for most of June – but only on weekdays.

Adur District Council stepped in to query the closure dates when they were revised, as they now cover a packed month of events, including the Wild Life Festival and Adur Festival.

The council had originally given the closure dates as April 13 to May 1 but the works have since been pushed back.

West Sussex County Council agreed yesterday to limit the work to 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, leaving the bridge open during the key weekends.

John O’Brien, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We have listened to concerns raised about the timing of this work and are pleased that we have been able to reschedule the planned weekend working to allow these popular local events to go ahead without disruption.

“We are sorry for the disruption the work may cause, but it is unavoidable.

“It is normal practice for engineering projects of this scale and gives our contractor the chance to inspect and fix any defects. The underside of the bridge needs to be repainted and this time of year is most suitable because of the weather.”

Essential inspection and maintenance work are planned to start on June 1 and should take around three to four weeks.

The bridge will be open as usual at weekends to support the varied programme of events, including Shoreham Fort Military History Weekend on June 6 and 7, Adur Festival and Adur Art Trail on June 13 and 14, and the Beach Dreams Festival on June 20 and 21.

During the closure, a free shuttle bus service will operate every 15 minutes from the town centre and Shoreham Beach, similar to the service when the bridge was being built.

Part of this work requires contractor Osborne to use specialist access equipment to inspect the underside of the bridge and this will block access to the bridge when in operation.

The county council also announced Adur Ferry Bridge will take part in Shoreham River Fest during the August Bank Holiday weekend, when the swing span will be in operation.
