STAFF at a Shoreham store have helped raise more than £5,000 for children with special needs.

The team of 62 at The Co-operative in Ham Road chose to support Herons Dale Primary School as their charity for 2014.

Team manager Sue Smith explained: “Every other year, we can nominate our own charity to support. Last year, we decided to raise money for Herons Dale Primary School.

“We just kept doing fundraising all through the year, cake sales, bring and buy sales, fancy dress, etc.

“All the staff back the cause but Maggie Ford is the one who plays a big part in the fundraising efforts.”

The staff were all given the chance the nominate who they wanted to support.

“Maggie’s grandson goes to Herons Dale and she knew they needed a minibus so everyone wanted to support that,” added Sue.

“She stands out in the rain with the sales, she does really well. Her family bakes a lot of the cakes as well.”

A cheque for £5,187 was presented to Trish Stepney, head teacher at the Shoreham school.

Sue said: “Now they have got their minibus, the money is going towards playground equipment.”
