Tony Doll, 74, said goodbye to Maisie, an eight-year-old Norfolk Terrier that died from what vets believe to be Septicaemia, a form of blood poisoning that may have been caused by a dog attack on Maisie a month ago.

Tony, of Gordon Avenue in Shoreham, was walking Maisie through Buckingham Park when another dog off its lead ran up and grabbed Maisie around the throat.

Tony pulled the attacking dog off Maisie, at which point the dog and its owner disappeared, but his pet was left with a large swelling which soon became worse.

Maisie was hospitalised on Tuesday, and Tony and his daughter Rebecca made the hard decision to put the dog down after a call this morning to say there had been no improvement.

Rebecca, 29, of South Street in Tarring said: “My dad is so upset, he’s absolutely broken, you know, some people say it is just a dog, but his dogs were his world and I don’t think I have ever seen him cry so hard. He’s just heartbroken and I feel so bad for not being able to take that away.

“Maisie did not deserve to go in this way and I hope the owner of this other dog is reading this somewhere and feels really bad. The last thing we want now is for this to happen to another dog.”

Rebecca and her dad set up a JustGiving fund in Maisie’s name after the accident to help pay for her treatments.

She added: “I just want to say thank you to the local community for their donations.”
