A DRUMMING session immersed Shoreham children in a West African experience.

The pre-school children at Young Sussex Nursery took part in an afternoon of West African drumming and storytelling, run by Jeanette Hodgson from Stories and Drums.

They learned about the African djembe drum and its sounds. Jeanette played a solo drum piece then taught the children how to play the instrument, so they could all take part in the story singing and drumming together.

Sarah Burt, nursery manager, said: “We always aim to provide the very best opportunities for our children to develop and learn. African drums and storytelling offers a new and different learning experience, which appealed to us.

“It fully immerses the children in the West African culture and its music, which helps the children develop rhythmic understanding, co-ordination and aids their concentration and listening skills.

“The children were very proud when they all drummed together. There was a real sense of achievement.”
