A NEW postmaster is being sought for Southwick.

Post Office Ltd says it is committed to maintaining a post office in the town.

Sheila Tapster, network transformation PR manager, said: “The current postmaster has expressed an interest in leaving if a suitable new operator can be found.

“The vacancy has been advertised. Any relocation would be subject to public consultation.”

Current postmaster Sameer Philips revealed the news at the end of the public meeting in Southwick last Thursday.

Mr Philips, who took over the post office last year, said: “I don’t know how long it is going to be a post office.

“I have done my best but I have said I can’t afford it. I will be honest with you, I gave up. I have lost all that effort.”

Recent changes to the way post offices operate mean they were now being combined with convenience-type stores.

Mr Philips said this meant changes in the way postmasters were paid.

“The business is already losing money. I am hitting the wall now. They will need to try to find someone to take it over.”

He told the crowded room that he had signed the forms after Post Office Ltd gave him until the end of August to decide whether or not he wanted to carry on.

The flower shop in Southwick Square, which Mr Philips also runs, is on the market as well.

He blamed the council for threatening to put the rents up in the recent rent review.
