Road rage victim's call for signs outside recycling plant

A driver subjected to road rage-fuelled abuse at a recycling centre in East Worthing has called for changes to road signs.

John Caddick from Ferring regularly uses the centre in Willowbrook Road, Worthing.

Two years ago, he noticed drivers queueing in the outside lane to get into the site while the inside lane was empty. Mr Caddick contacted Viridor, which runs the centre, and asked them to put up a sign saying ‘use both lanes at all times’ to alleviate the problem. Signs were then erected at the entrance of the site.

Now, Mr Caddick is calling for more signs at the bottom of the ramp in the centre after being subjected to abuse from other drivers.

He said: “I have used the empty inside lane, and, at times, I have had people who queued in the outside lane remonstrating with me for having done so, which can become quite aggressive.

“So far, I have managed to appease them by pointing out the sign at the entrance which they did not see.

“My concern is that one day there will be a disturbed, violent person in the queue of cars who takes exception, and then we may well have a serious and tragic road rage incident in Worthing.”

Mr Caddick said he emailed Viridor three months ago about the problem but had not received a response.

“An additional sign at the bottom of the ramp would make it much clearer to all users that both lanes are to be used at all times,” he said.

“This is a simple solution to a potentially serious problem. I do not want to see someone seriously injured, or worse.”

A West Sussex County Council spokesman said: “Due to both lanes not being fully utilised at Worthing HWRS a member of staff will be on hand at busy times to remind residents, which should help to improve the flow of traffic.

“Aggressive or abusive behaviour at any of our sites is not tolerated and should be reported to a member of staff if seen.”
