PHOTOS: Thousands brave the weather for fire station’s open day

Not even the rain could dampen the community spirit as thousands turned out for Littlehampton Fire Station’s open day.

Crews worked hard throughout the day to put on a host of events for visitors as they learnt about the day to day running of the station.

Around 2,000 people took part in activities and watched demonstrations on how crews deal with road traffic incidents and save people from heights as well as try out the equipment and look inside the fire engines.

There was also a dramatic demonstration on how to tackle chip pan fires.

Representatives from Adur and Worthing Police popped along to speak to visitors along with members of the Red Cross, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the local community responders.

Graham Woods, watch manager at the station, said: “Obviously the weather wasn’t in our favour but we had a fantastic turn out from the community. It was good to see those old and new.

“We had a couple of calls throughout the day but it lets people see how we respond to incidents.

“We showed them lots of the work we do and also thing that the public don’t know we actually do.

“It was a really good day.”

As well as the actives put on throughout the day crews were also rasing money for Keep Connor Active appeal and the Firefighters Charity.

Graham said it was too early to tell just how much had been raised but it had been a good day for fundrasing and for the community.
