Parish councils club together to save Saturday 106 bus for villages

THE Saturday 106 bus service will continue through the summer, thanks to the efforts of five parish councils.

Steyning, Upper Beeding, Bramber, Lancing and Henfield councils have agreed to club together to fund the Compass service on Saturdays, until the end of August.

The money will either come from the parish precept, or a West Sussex County Council grant, which has already been signed off, Steyning Parish Council heard on Monday.

But people will need to use the Saturday 106 bus, which is currently the only direct route to Worthing through the villages, to guarantee further funds next winter.

Steyning Parish Council chairman David Barling explained: “All were mindful that we needed quite good numbers to travel to make it viable.”

He said the parish councils had worked very hard to secure the service.

“All the parish councils wanted to see the uptake during the summer months,” he added.

“We will review it at the beginning of August and if the numbers stack up, it could well be we will continue funding for the next six months.”

He told the council it was a “a short-term experiment”.
