ST BARNABAS: Schoolchildren visit St Barnabas as part of new project to educate on hospice work

The project, called St B’s, will see groups of 11 children visiting the hospice every Monday afternoon for four-week courses, working with patients from the hospice.

It involves children and patients working together on an art project and addresses national curriculum requirements such as loss and transition, and exploring emotions and bereavement.

The first group of students recently completed the course, and I had the pleasure of handing out the certificates to the children in their final week.

It was nice to see them all enjoying their time with the patients.

I must say that speaking to a group of nine to ten-year-old children is an audience I’m not normally used to!

Explaining concepts of life and death to children isn’t an easy task, and project lead Marcelle has done an excellent job in helping them to learn about emotional subjects that even many adults struggle to cope with.

The main aim of the St B’s project is to enable us reach out to more people in the local community, while also helping to educate children about the work of hospices and people living with life-limiting conditions.

All of the children for the pilot project, which ends in March 2017, will be from Storrington Primary School.
