FUNDING for a new cooker has been agreed by Adur District Council to keep a community café up and running.
The £675 has been allocated to Southlanders as an extension to round three of the Adur Competitive Community Grants Budget 2013/14.
Cllr David Simmons, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, made the decision last Wednesday.
He said: “This is an essential piece of equipment, much needed by Southlanders, who provide much-needed support in this area, which is one of our more deprived neighbourhoods.”
Southlanders, based at Milward Court, Wilmot Road, Shoreham, is a community group providing support, meals and social opportunities for older and more vulnerable people.
Chairman Ann Martin said they were grateful to receive money from the community grants budget previously for a new fridge and had been expecting funds from other sources towards the cooker.
“Sadly, this funding has not been forthcoming, putting the lunch club at risk,” she added.
“Our old cooker takes a very long time to heat up and we have more than 30 lunches to serve on Fridays.”
Following the decision, and the recent round of grant allocations, there is approximately £20,000 left in the 2013/14 budget.
