A PLAYFUL florist is bringing creativity to Christmas in Shoreham and holding classes to teach others how to make a festive table centre piece.

Ella Turner, 36, owner and founder of Byrd and Spry, a florist and events business, taught herself flower arranging.

She changed her life in September by leaving her job as a teacher and assistant head and starting up her own business.

She is inspired by Constance Spry, a boundary-pushing florist and also former teacher, whose work was wild and passionate.

Ella said: “This time of year, you’re busy and rushing around, and don’t have much time to yourself, but if it’s for a purpose like making a centre piece for your table then you can justify spending a little time doing something you enjoy that’s fun.”

“The centre piece workshop is going to be very festive and very fresh.

“There are no rules in my class, you can’t get it wrong. I teach people the principles and provide nice things and then people can play and just be creative.

“I like to focus on details in my business. Flowers are a treat and I want people to feel these classes are a treat, so things are presented very well and there’s good music and delicious snacks.”

The first Christmas workshop Ella held was last week and she taught people to make their own wreaths, she said: “The wreath making was lovely, such a nice atmosphere.

“We had mulled wine and nice treats. There was a mix of people, all women, some who were very crafty others who thought they weren’t.

“I supply them with all the materials and taught them techniques, then let them experiment

“I am a teacher by trade so it feels natural for me to help people and teach them.

“These evenings are fun and friendly and everyone feels a sense of achievement at the end of it.”

The Christmas centre piece workshop is on December, 20 at 7-9pm at the Time Out Studio, Tarmount Lane, Shoreham.

Ella’s up-and-coming workshops include: winter hand-tied bouquets on January 25, 11am to 1pm at West Street Lofts, Shoreham; a make-your-own-bouquet evening, February 14, 7-9pm at Time Out Studios; 2014 DIY Wedding Flowers workshop, March 1, 11am to 4pm, at West Street Lofts, and hen do workshops at any time of year.
