FLOODING in Steyning has been causing an issue for schoolchildren this week.
A blockage under the road in Shooting Field has caused water to flood out and down the hill, into Gatewick House.
Highways engineers were called out on Saturday but they were unable to clear the blockage, meaning a specialist team needing to be brought in today or tomorrow.
At Steyning Parish Council last night, questions were raised about safety for schoolchildren, as cars were said to be driving too fast through the water.
The stream flows past the Star Inn and under the front gardens in Tanyard Lane, close to Gatewick House, then under the road and on, eventually joining the River Adur.
The water level at Shooting Field has nearly reached the pavement, much higher than normal, and water can be seen bubbling up through the cracked surface of the road.
A team from the Environment Agency was at the scene this morning, pumping water so it bypasses the blockage. Pipes are running down into the garden of Gatewick House.
