HUNDREDS of people visited Steyning Showcase – and declared it one of the best yet.

The event drew together more than 50 organisations from across the town at the Steyning Centre on Saturday.

Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert visited during the afternoon to meet members of the clubs at their stands.

He said: “The showcase is a great event which gives the many local organisations involved in Steyning’s life the opportunity to connect with the public and each other.

“I certainly valued the chance to catch up with many of the groups, to hear about the events they are planning and to arrange visits over the course of the year.”

Stalls provided information on hobbies and activity sessions, public services, local societies and voluntary groups.

Mr Herbert was met by Steyning Parish Council chairman Philip Bowell, Bramber Parish Council chairman Roger Potter and Bramber councillor Nick Mills.

He toured the stands and chatted to representatives, including Steyning’s neighbourhood wardens and PCSOs, the South Downs Society and the Dingemans Centre.

Pupils and staff of Steyning Grammar School spoke to Mr Herbert about celebrations for its 400th anniversary.

Resident Mike Kelly congratulated Steyning Parish Council, which organised the event.

“It was so uplifting to experience how our community co-operates in making Steyning such an interesting and harmonious place to live,” he added.

“It makes one appreciate how many people volunteer their time and effort organising such a variety of enjoyable events and public-spirited services.”

Council clerk Sue Booth and deputy clerk Hazel Roxby were praised for their efforts at Monday’s parish council meeting.

Mr Bowell said they had done a superb job organising the showcase, including co-ordinating the many organisations and organising the layout, and he led a round of applause.

Cllr David Barling said it was first rate and congratulated everyone involved in organising it.

He added: “I went down and spoke to everybody and they all said it was one of the best that had been held.”
