STEYNING is getting all jazzed up next month, thanks to a grant from Arts Council England.

The government agency has given Steyning Music Society £2,120 to help fund a jazz workshop, in partnership with Steyning Jazz Club and Steyning Grammar School.

The workshop is open to singers and instrumentalists aged 13 and over who have an enthusiasm for jazz.

Gary Prior, director of Steyning Music Society, said the workshop ‘happily falls within the 400th anniversary of the founding of Steyning Grammar School’.

There will be two days of workshops and concerts on Saturday, February 22, and Sunday, February 23.

“The workshops are open to a broad band of people of mixed ages and musical abilities wishing to develop approaches and techniques to playing jazz music in small groups and big band settings,” explained Gary.

“Places are open to all musicians aged 13 years upwards with an enthusiasm for jazz and a familiarity with their instrument. As a rough guide, you will be playing to a standard of about grade five equivalent or above.”

The collaborative project between the three Steyning organisations was awarded the arts grant in September.

Gary added: “The three organisers, Steyning Music Society, Steyning Jazz Club and the music department of Steyning Grammar School, are busy preparing for the workshops, which will run throughout the day on the Saturday and Sunday, culminating with jazz concerts in the evenings of both days.

“The workshop is open to singers and instrumentalists who wish to develop their approaches and techniques to playing jazz in small groups and big band settings.”

Composer Julian Nicholas will lead the group of tutors, drawn from the jazz faculty of Chichester College.

The daytime workshops are at Steyning Grammar School, with evening concerts being presented at the Steyning Centre.

An application form can be downloaded at www.steyningmusicsociety.org or call Gary Prior on 01903 812662 for a brochure. Workshop fees are £50 for adults and £30 for young people aged 13 to 18. Steyning Jazz Club is offering three bursary places for people who qualify. Apply by email to denis.cummings@steyningjazzclub.co.uk
