Paintings of Shoreham Port went on display at Southwick Railway Station last week, as part of an enhancement scheme.

The three new artworks gracing the walls of the railway station were the winners in Shoreham Port’s community art competition, held at the end of last year.

Winner Alan Warren’s striking pastel painting, Caroline Shaw’s photgraphic collage, in second place, and Anne Light’s triptych canvas, in third place, can be enjoyed both by passengers at the station and others on trains passing through.

Andy Leister, area manager for Southern Rail, said: “The artwork is of a fantastic standard and it is great to see them on display in public.

“We hope the artwork will brighten up passengers’ journeys.”

Having seen the finished works at the launch on Thursday, Rodney Lunn, chief executive at Shoreham Port said he was extremely pleased with how impressive they looked.

“The reproductions are considerably larger than the original work, which brings out the intricacy and detail of the artwork.

“They have brought colour and character to the station and we hope they will be enjoyed by the local community, our customers and Southern Rail passengers for many years to come.”

The competition was based around the theme of Shoreham Port and Mr Lunn said people living around it really felt part of it.

“It really is at the heart of the community,” he added.

Mr Warren, who was abroad, so unable to make the launch, said it was an honour to have his work on display at the station.

It was the vibrant colour and character of his painting of the dry dock in operation that caught the judges’ eyes.

Seeing her collage turned into a print, Caroline said: “I can’t believe it to be honest. I feel very proud. I have never entered anything like this before.”

Marine artist Anne said she was keen on fishing and spent a lot of time down at the port. In fact, her own boat features in her painting, which was inspired by a stunning sky she witnessed one night when sailing into the harbour.

“It was amazing,” she said. “The sky was a stunning scarlet colour and the silhouettes of the surrounding area really stood out.”

Shoreham Port had the three wining pieces digitally copied and reprinted onto hard wearing boards, which are now mounted on both platform walls.
