A BRILLIANT shadow theatre stole the show at the Magic of Christmas event in Fishersgate.

Organisers said the day had been a great success, with more than 300 people attending on December 22, despite the unpredictable weather.

Among the entertainment at the Fishersgate Centre, in West Road, was Jason Abrahams singing seasonal Rat Pack songs, Adur Council chairman dressed as Father Christmas in Santa’s Grotto and a band night for young people.

But it was puppeteer Grethe Mangala Jensen who stole the show, using a shadow theatre designed and made by Shoreham artists Elizabeth and Ole Mienert.

Elizabeth said: “Jensen mesmerised the audience of various ages and abilities with non-narrative stories, told though a nonsense language of noises and sounds.

“She created shadow images using silhouettes created by audience members using a giant pantograph – a homemade device built by local artist Nick Sayers, who instructs participants to draw around each other to create miniature silhouettes of their figures.”

Many young people went along in the evening for the band night, featuring five bands playing to an avid audience.

Young band members Goldie Majtas and Reece Oliver were instrumental in organising the music event and Elizabeth, project manager with Pop Gun Productions, had helped them get a £500 grant from Sussex Clubs for Young People for a sound engineer and publicity.

Elizabeth said: “The young people said that they enjoyed the experience and would be definitely be interested in doing it again.

“The Fishersgate Centre committee also thought the evening was a success and have subsequently asked the organisers to arrange a battle of the bands in 2014.”

Eastbrook Primary Academy pupils and Shoreham Academy students were also involved, making sculptures and lanterns for the event.
