School celebrates good Ofsted report

A PRIMARY school has seen its rating improve from satisfactory to good following the latest inspection by education watchdog Ofsted.

Inspectors visited St Peter’s Catholic Primary School in Sullington Way, Shoreham, on March 12 and 13 and published their report on Thursday.

They ranked all aspects of the school as good, including pupils’ achievement, quality of teaching, pupils’ behaviour and safety, and the school’s leadership and management.

Interim head teacher Lorraine Warner said she was delighted by the judgment.

“We feel the many positive comments made about St Peter’s strongly capture the ethos of our school,” said Mrs Warner.

The report described St Peter’s as a ‘happy and friendly’ school where pupils made good progress in maths, reading and writing, reaching average attainment levels by the end of year six.

“Pupils’ progress in reading, writing and mathematics has accelerated considerably since the previous inspection because the quality of teaching has improved,” said the inspectors.

They also said phonics were taught ‘very effectively’, and praised teachers for making accurate assessments of pupils’ learning.

“The interim head teacher and governors have focused rigorously on improving teaching,” said the report.

“As a result, the quality of teaching is now good.”

The school’s leaders were described as an ‘active and successful force in driving improvements.’

Chairman of governors Yvette Hart said: “The Ofsted judgement of ‘good’ in all four areas is testament to the hard work and commitment of Mrs Warner, all our staff and governors.

“We thank all our parents, and especially the children of the school, for this well-deserved outcome.”

In order to achieve an outstanding rating, the report said staff needed to raise expectations and ensure teaching progressed to the highest level.

Staff must ensure the work set is hard enough, particularly for the most able pupils, and that pupils are given time to read teachers’ comments in their books.

The report said ‘clear and consistent’ rules on when and how to use punctuation must also be given.

Changes to the way maths is taught have resulted in pupils making better progress than before, according to the report, which highlighted a more consistent approach to teaching basic maths skills.

The inspectors added that ‘sharply-focused teaching’ for small groups of more-able pupils meant they were making faster progress.

However, the report pointed out that pupils were making slightly slower progress in writing than in other subjects which was a priority for the school.

An Ofsted survey of 51 parents showed 88 per cent would recommend the school to other parents.

St Peter’s is celebrating its success with a picnic and afternoon of fun activities for the children on Friday, April 25, from midday to 3pm.

Mrs Warner was a local authority adviser for the school before her appointment in September and will remain in her post until September this year.

The process to appoint a permanent head teacher is underway.
