Pampering success at Southwick’s ‘hidden gem’

PAMPERING paid off at the Sussex MS Treatment Centre in Southwick, with the hoped-for fund-raising target passed, and still rising.
The Most Spectacular Pamper Event, held on Friday and Saturday, raised £2,500 for the Croft Avenue centre – at least 25 per cent more than last year, partly thanks to an extra date being added.
Adur council chairman Peter Metcalfe opened the event, which included pamper treatments, craft and gift stalls, on Friday evening.
Delighted to be invited, he said: “I enjoyed popping into one of our little hidden gems of Adur.”
He said he was surprised to learn £2,500 amounted to just one weeks’ funding.
“It puts it into perspective how important these fund-raising events are,” he added.
The event was organised by Jeanette Jones, who suffers from MS and uses the centre regularly.
“It was an amzaing couple of very successful days,” she said.
The amount raised was fantastic, and it was still rising, she explained.
“But in some respects, what is just as important is the secondary reason for this event – awareness,” she added.
“I know of at least three people who would like to become members after attending the event, and also several who were diagnosed but had been ‘put off’ coming in to the centre as they were daunted or scared about what they might see.
“So, I am very pleased with all aspects of this event. From some of the feedback I have received, I think I will definitely do this over two days again.”
There were nine therapists waiting to pamper visitors, and more than 10 stalls to tempt them with wonderful foods and pampery items.
The treatment centre started out more than 25 years ago, when people in Sussex with MS decided to get together and fund-raise for treatment equipment.
Now, it has expanded to help people with other long-term health conditions, such as stroke, ME, and children with cerebral palsy and autism, to name but a few.
People using the centre can access a wide variety of drug-free treatments, exercise classes and social opportunities to cater for differing needs.
