Making maths fun is all in a day’s work

Having just claimed a Woman of the Year in education accolade from the Herald’s parent company Johnston Press, Stephanie Cracknell’s work is continuing to gain rapidly in popularity.
Impressively, she has made maths seem fun for youngsters, with her Mathemagical venture, teaching pre-school toddlers about numeracy through a range of structured play.
It is a formula that is paying off for her, as the business she started just over a year ago at the Wave Children and Family Centre in Broadwater is now taking her into other pre-schools.
She said: “I was quite humbled to have won a Woman of the Year award, as there were some amazing women there who had worked for years for government and charities. It’s already helped me with my business.
“I’d been a maths teacher in Crawley for nine years and when my kids came along I came up with some games and songs at home which used maths, which my daughter loved and helped her understand the world around her. I was amazed how much of a difference it made to her. So that’s where the idea came from for Mathemagical,”
The 38 year-old of Ashacre Lane, Worthing, added: “What we’ve been aiming to do more than anything is to show that learning maths can be fun. Through the play sessions of about 50 minutes, we’re able to help parents understand how they can teach their children better about maths.” Visit www.mathemagical.co.uk
