Lions couple tackle 12-day charity cycle

TWO Shoreham cycling enthusiasts are tackling a 12-day ride to raise funds to tackle blood cancer.

The couple, who are both members of Adur East Lions Club, will be cycling more than 420 miles, from St Austell in Cornwall to Dover in Kent.

The challenge, from April 22 to May 3, is aiming to raise £2,000 for the Lions International Blood Research Appeal (LIBRA).

Club president Susan Saunders and her partner Maurice Allen are already training hard and on Tuesday, they were checking out one of the legs of the route, from Emsworth to Shoreham.

Susan said: “We estimate we will cover more than 400 miles, so we are putting in lots of training.

“Our activity programme includes spinning classes in the gym and cycling at least once each week.

“We are encouraging LIBRA supporters and local cycling groups to join us along the way.

“Maurice and I decided to support LIBRA as it is such a special charity and it really helps to save lives.

“I think we should all help to raise awareness about blood disorders, research and the development of new treatments.”

LIBRA is the only charity in the world that solely raises funds for the haematology department at King’s College Hospital in London.

Funds ensure the department is able to develop new and improved treatments for blood cancer patients across the UK and overseas.

Susan and Maurice have been promised lots of help along the way.

“We have been delighted with the response so far from other Lions clubs on the route and individuals,” added Susan.

“The former have offered accommodation, sponsored us and offered to cycle parts of the route with us, whilst the latter have started sponsoring us via our virginmoneygiving page.”

She said they had been out and about on their bikes to practise various aspects of the route, as well as working in the gym.

“We’ve done shorter, hilly routes such as the Devil’s Dyke, as well as longer flat routes, such as Emsworth to Shoreham.”
