Lifeboat volunteers are honoured for commitment

FIVE Shoreham RNLI volunteers received honours at the charity’s regional awards ceremony.

The station officials brought home gold and silver for Shoreham lifeboat station, having been nominated for their hard work and dedication.

Keith Phelps, station lifeboat operations manager, said: “These awards are well deserved by our volunteers who have spent years devoting their time to the RNLI.

“It was good to see five of our station officials recognised for their efforts.”

Lady Mary Mumford, the station’s president, was awarded the gold badge for all her work and support over the years.

She has been involved with the RNLI since 1960 and became president of the Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Branch in 1975.

Former coxswain Peter Huxtable presented her with her gold badge at a tea party at the lifeboat station.

Volunteers Bob Page, Tim Leigh and Michelle Tugwell were awarded silver statuettes and Andy Morgan was awarded his silver badge.

Bob and Tim have volunteered as deputy launching authorities (DLAs) at the station for the 15 years each, deciding when the lifeboats should be launched. Bob is also a sea safety officer.

Michelle was rewarded for her work as the station press officer and administrator during the last 15 years, as well as her work promoting the lifeboat appeal to raise money for a new lifeboat station.

Andy, the station visits officer, was awarded his silver badge for educational awareness work with schools in the region.

The four volunteers attended the RNLI London and south east regional awards ceremony at the Hurlingham Club in London to collect their awards.

As a volunteer organisation, the RNLI rewards the fundraisers and crew members who give their time all year round to help save lives at sea.

Every year, supporters are thanked for their hard work and commitment.at the annual presentation of awards.
