Great escape pays off for students

Waiting for Video...

Hundreds of students escaped from Steyning Grammar School on Friday and went AWOL for charity.

The annual sixth form college Jail Break saw 205 year 13 students released for a day of fund-raising for the NSPCC.

Collecting began with a hearty breakfast, donated by Worthing catering company 3663, as the £1 charge went straight to the NSPCC appeal.

Students were then locked in the jails, after which they broke out and were cheered on by fellow students in years 10, 11 and 12.

The convicts made off in a collection of brightly-decorated vehicles, including large tractors and trailers, limousines, sledges, a trolley and bicycles.

They went on the run to Brighton, Portslade, Hove, Shoreham, Southwick, Crawley, Storrington, Pulborough, Henfield, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and Horsham.

They also stopped en route to collect at the Holmbush Centre in Shoreham, Tooveys Auction House, Old Barn Nurseries and Sainsbury’s at Lyons Farm in Worthing.

Students carrying collection boxes also visited the lower school site in Church Street and nearby primary schools.

All students were finally recaptured at the bandstand in Horsham, where the sixth form college band Pulse played as they were rounded up.

Russell Squire from the NSPCC was overwhelmed by the effort made and generosity of the students.

He was at the school on their return to supervise the count and thanked them for their enthusiasm. Monies raised will be used to fund ChildLine calls in Sussex and to train four NSPCC counsellors.

The total raised so far stands at £6,001.

Assistant head Sally Randall expressed how proud the staff and parents were of the students, who had been tremendous ambassadors.

“Our students have shown initiative, commitment and determination in making a positive difference, learning much form the experience,” she said.

The school thanked Horsham District Council for its support, C&L coaches for providing transport, parents who helped on the day and the public for their generosity.
