HEAVY rain on bank holiday Monday may not have suited everybody, but runners in the inaugural Shoreham RiverFest 10km liked the conditions for the race.

Organised by Lancing Eagles Running Club, the trail running event followed footpaths around the River Adur.

Chairman David Clubb said: “A little bit of rain does not stop a trail race, in fact, the runners liked the conditions.

“There were 170 very wet and muddy finishing runners. Fortunately, most of the mud was washed off by the rain after they finished and they walked back to the Adur Outdoor Activity Centre.”

There were even 25 runners who entered on the day, despite the weather.

Winner Damien Hersey, from Sutton Runners, finished in 38min 39sec and the first woman was Sarah Kingston, from Worthing Harriers, in 41min 34sec.

The event attracted entrants from Germany, Cheshire, Gloucester, Gosport, London and Sutton alongside the many from Shoreham and Lancing, including many novice runners who are not members of running clubs.

Mr Clubb said: “The runners loved the flat course, race and the weather.

“When asked, they commented they will be back next year.”
