Civic centre is back on the market

ADUR Civic Centre is back on the market with a revised planning brief, following recent controversy about the sewer running under the site.

An exempt information report on the sale of the civic centre was discussed at the joint strategic committee of Adur and Worthing councils last Thursday.

Minutes of the meeting which have been made public reveal the committee confirmed that the previously agreed preferred bidder was no longer Adur District Council’s preferred bidder.

The committee also authorised Cliff Harrison, executive head of technical services, to instruct agents to offer the civic centre site back to the market with a revised planning brief.

Speaking after the meeting, Adur Council leader Neil Parkin said: “The site has still got to be a gateway to Shoreham type development.

“We were very insistent it has got to be a quality development.”

The previous planning brief had been for mixed use, with retail and some housing.

The new brief offered a “blank sheet”, still with mixed development but more likely to be focusing on housing.

It would definitely not be just retail use, Mr Parkin confirmed.

The Ham Road centre first went up for sale in June, 2011, and was marketed by BNP Paribas Real Estate.

The 2.2 acre site was offered for sale as a freehold with vacant possession.
