MESSENGERS Community Gospel Choir has launched into its sixth year of workshops and concerts, ready for a packed season of performances.

The choir started as a youth choir in January, 2008, but has since branched out to an entire community group, with choirs for children, teenagers and adults.

Singers rehearse Tuesday evenings at Shoreham Baptist Church, Western Road, Shoreham, with a different time slot for each age group.

Musical director Julia Daintree said: “Our community gospel choir opened its doors and has showcased the singing talents of about 50 children, teenagers and now adults from Shoreham, Steyning, Lancing, Worthing and Brighton.

“Messengers sing a wide variety of music, including traditional and contemporary gospel, soul and chart music – anything with a gospel vibe and an uplifting message.”

All of the money the choir raises is given to its partner school and choir, also called Messengers, in Kittetika, Uganda.

Mrs Daintree added: “We have a special friendship with Peter and Rose Kasozi, who head up the school there, and the money makes a huge difference to the lives of the children in their care.”

Messengers is keen to welcome new members in any of the three choirs. Children meet from 6.15pm for an hour, the youth choir meets from 6.45pm to 8pm, and the adults rehearse from 8pm to 9.30pm.

Mrs Daintree said: “A highlight for everyone is when all three choirs perform some songs together at our showcase concerts.

“Everybody is welcome to join – there are no auditions. You will find a warm welcome and you will be guaranteed to have lots of fun and find many new friends.”

Gospel music has been described as ‘funky hymns’. It is thought to have originated in African-American churches and has developed into a style that has inspired a host of modern choirs and contemporary gospel and R&B sounds.
