DIVERS are planning to visit a wreck off Shoreham as part of commemorations to mark the centenary of the start of world war one.

Brighton Sub Aqua Club, based at the Sussex Yacht Club, in Brighton Road, will dive on their favourite wreck, the SS Pentrych, six miles out to sea from Shoreham.

Dive leader Christine Bohea said: “We will place a flag on the wreck and take photos, while raising awareness of the amazing underwater heritage off our Sussex coast.”

The SS Pentrych was an armed cargo ship that was sunk by a German U-boat during world war one. Club members regularly dive the wreck as it is near their base and easily accessible.

Christine added: “The gun is still visible, although after the winter storms, we are not sure what new wreckage has been uncovered.

“We also carry out Sea Search dives for the Marine Conservation Society to record the huge amount of wildlife on the wreck, which has become a reef and haven for all sorts of creatures.”
