Briton’s Croft plan could see site works begin in summer
DETAILED designs for the Briton’s Croft development in Steyning have been finalised.
A planning application to demolish the vacant care scheme, in Charlton Street, has this week been submitted to Horsham District Council.
The redevelopment scheme proposed is for 20 local needs, affordable housing flats, which will prioritise older people, together with a communal lounge.
The flats will be arranged in blocks of four around a central spinal road, with associated car parking, bin storage, private and communal gardens.
Rachel Richards, marketing manager for Saxon Weald, said: “We submitted our planning application on Monday for a scheme consisting of 13 one-bed flats and seven two-bed flats.
“Priority for the flats will be given to people with a local connection and to those aged over 60.
“We hope to gain planning consent in the summer and start building work shortly after.
“Our thanks go to all those who took the trouble to come and see our proposals and give us a valuable insight into what would work best for the Steyning community.”
Residents had flocked to the Steyning Centre in December to view Saxon Weald’s detailed designs and give their comments on the scheme.
They welcomed news the site would be new affordable housing for older people with a local connection.
Steyning Parish Council chairman David Barling said at the time the council was fully supportive of the scheme being for all older people and it was pleased with the designs.
One of the points raised at the previous public consultation, which was held in June, was the issue of communal entrances, so Saxon Weald said it had ensured the proposed flats would each have their own front door.
Each flat would also have a private back garden.
Among the consultation responses submitted to Horsham council this week, George Cockman, district councillor for Steyning, said both he and fellow councillor Sue Rogers needed to be kept in close touch with this application as it progresses, “as we have both been heavily involved in the development of concept”.
Saxon Weald announced the closure of the assisted housing scheme at Briton’s Croft in summer, 2011. The following year, it set out two redevelopment options, and asked residents to vote on their preferred scheme.
