Beeding and Bramber Local History Society

THE April meeting of Beeding and Bramber Local History Society was a great success, with 64 members attending to hear Kevin Gordon’s talk on the Great War in Sussex.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 7, at 7.45pm, in the Village Hall, High Street, Upper Beeding, when Joanna Wilkins will be giving a talk on The Lost Village of Tidemills.

Society secretary Pat Nightingale said: “There used to be several tide mills along the coast of Sussex and the one at Bishopstone, near Newhaven, was the largest of these, but no longer exists.

“The mill operated at low tide when water that had filled a reservoir at high tide was allowed out in a controlled manner to turn horizontal mill wheels.”

Entry for visitors is £2, and refreshments are available in the interval. The meeting is the last of the season and the society will meet again in September.
