BBC filming inspires launch of a new club

A television appearance on the BBC by Shoreham woodturner Chris Grace has inspired the launch of a new club dedicated to the craft.

Chris appeared on Paul Martin’s Handmade Revolution in October, with Geronimo, his twirling wood turned clown.

He was filmed at the Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre on July 28, with the aim of getting people fired up about the country’s craft heritage and encouraging everyone to have a go.

Realised the extent of people’s interest in crafts, Chris and a group of like-minded woodturners resolved to establish a new woodturning club, choosing Portslade, with the expectation of attracting members from within a 12-mile radius.

“There are many local groups that primarily attract women, but fewer for men,” said Chris.

“We aim to attract both and are open to everyone, including younger people.”

Chris has been interested in metalwork and woodwork since his grandad started showing him how to use tools.

He has since taken up woodturning and now makes one-off items, does woodturning demonstrations for clubs and gives talks to local groups on Geronimo, which received many admiring looks and compliments during the BBC filming.

Having also featured in the booklet that accompanies the Handmade Revolution series, Chris is hoping many more people will turn up at his future engagements.

Chris will be demonstrating at the club’s first session on February 7, launching a varied programme of activities, including talks, at the club’s monthly meetings.

The Sussex Woodturners’ new woodturning club will meet on the first Thursday of each month at Portslade Town Hall, from 7pm to 10pm.
