Help to lead a healthier life

FAMILIES are being offered help to lead more healthy lives.

Inspiring Healthier Families, which provided family-focused help to overweight children and young people, is inviting 24 families to get involved.

Funded by Adur and Worthing councils’ Wellbeing Hubs and NHS West Sussex, the scheme has already helped 20 youngsters since it started in May.

Adur council’s health, safety and wellbeing cabinet member, David Simmons, said: “The results so far have been extremely encouraging.

“Not only will success help the individual participants’ current and future health needs, but evidence already shows that it helps them feel better about themselves and increases self-confidence. Well done to all involved.”

About 80 per cent of those who have already joined up have reduced their weight, and all participants have reduced their waist circumference and their body mass index (BMI).

A council spokeswoman added: “As significant is the impact that the programme has on the confidence levels of a lot of the young people. The programme has also helped to influence the parents’ understanding of how to support their children and for some it has led to them making changes of their own such as improving their diet, giving up smoking or taking more exercise.”
