Fitness equals fees at Shoreham gym with energy tracker app

Customers at a gym in Shoreham can earn back their membership fees by working out as part of new scheme.

Beach Fit gyms in Shoreham and Lancing are offering members an app to track how much energy they produce on the fitness studio bikes and cross-trainers.

Individuals can register to have their fees reduced on a sliding scale, depending on their energy output.

Business owner Paul Crane said linking an energy tracker to fees was a ‘world first’.

He said: “We’re the first gym to be able to project the energy produced in the gym [on a screen], but more than that, you can now find out how much energy you produce using an app.

The more you work out, the less the membership fees.”

A member who exercises at the gym for an hour three times a week could typically save five per cent on their monthly membership for producing 500W.

Fee reductions are also available at 10 per cent for 1000W, 15 per cent for 1500W, and 20 per cent for 2000W produced per month.

“We wanted to make it an achievable entry level, explained Paul.

“For more experienced members, 2000W is equivalent to about six hours hard work, so it’s tough, but quite fun.”

Beach Fit aims to be an ‘ecogym’ with 74 per cent of members’ cycle power fed back into the national grid and an emphasis on sustainable resources. The personalised app developed by Sports Art is their latest advance in energy tracking.

Paul said feedback from customers had been positive.

“We’ve been testing for the last month, we’ve had the screen up and we’ve shown them how much energy they are producing,” he said.

“They love the idea in principle. For me, it’s the future of the industry,” he said.

The gym plans to offer the deal in both of its branches in Shoreham and Lancing. Paul stressed that lowering the carbon footprint of the gym was a priority.

He said: “We’re looking at all out internal processes to ensure that we become an ecogym, from the type of hand dryers we use to the toilet paper, we are trying to be as sustainable as possible.”

In the last three weeks, Beach Fit members have produced approximately 10kW, the rough equivalent of boiling five kettles of water.

Cyclists typically produce anywhere between 40 to 80W per hour depending on the intensity of the workout.
