The owners of a butchers in Southwick have installed an Automated External Defibrillator on the premises to help ensure anyone who suffers a cardiac arrest has the best possible chance of survival.
The move by Southwick Square Meat Ltd follows a ‘demystifying defibrillators’ event held by volunteers from St John Ambulance in December last year.
Businesses and organisations were invited to the first aid charity’s base in the town to learn CP) and familiarise themselves with how to operate the defibrillator.
After the event, the partners of Southwick Square Meat Ltd decided to apply for partial funding for the equipment through the British Heart Foundation’s community package scheme.
Partner John Burtenshaw said: “After the St John Ambulance demonstration last year, we felt a defibrillator would be an excellent addition to the community, especially after hearing how significant it can be to someone’s chance of survival during cardiac arrest.”
When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, the chance of survival falls by 10 per cent every minute without first aid. But, with CPR and the use of a defibrillator within three minutes, their chance of survival could be as high as 70 per cent.
