Here are Renaissance men and women of the future
PINT-SIZED Pasteurs, budding Bolts and dinky Debussys have had a busy time at school.
Pupils at Upper Beeding Primary School have been involved in all manner of activities in the past couple of weeks, including a day-long science workshop, marking the Olympic year and even travelling to Chichester Festival Theatre to take part in the annual children’s concert.
Roger Bray, a retired teacher, took a range of experiments in to the school last week, giving year five and six children the opportunity to get up close and personal with science. Cathy Whalley, science co-ordinator at the school, said: “Every child got involved.
“It was fun and exciting for them. They loved it.
“For the year six pupils, it was a fun way of doing a bit of revision for the SATS.”
The sessions included looking at reflections and light, and the children had chance to experiment with different angles of mirrors, and lasers, as well as ask questions.
From science to sport, the school also became part of the Get Set Network, a community of schools and colleges with a commitment to Olympic values, last week.
Abi Cappella, sports co-ordinator, said the school had to show how Upper Beeding was using London 2012 to promote sports in the school.
She said: “I included details of our planned Olympic month, sporting activities, both friendly and competitive, that we take part in, and how we encourage all children to participate in sport during school, through festivals and in competitive situations in and out of school.”
The arts have not been abandoned, either, as a group of key stage two children enjoyed a performance by Southern Pro Musica, conducted by Jonathan Willcocks.
“This was an excellent opportunity for the children to access live, classical music. The children loved the concert, and are very keen to make a return trip next year.
“In addition to that, a picture drawn by Poppy Rodwell, a year-four girl, was chosen for the cover of the programme,” said Corrine Wellby, music co-ordinator.
