ST BARNABAS: New project offers group outings for male patients

With the weather gradually improving and summer now seemingly approaching it is that time of year when we all like to start planning trips out into the community.

But spare a thought for those living with advanced life-limiting conditions, for whom a pleasant day trip may not be quite so simple.

That’s why I am delighted to announce that St Barnabas House is leading on a new community project, aiming to reach out to men living with advanced illnesses who may have become socially isolated at home.

The project, titled ManBus, is an extension of the hospice’s successful Community Companions scheme.

It will offer outings to men who would prefer a day out in a group, rather than a one-to-one visit in their own home.

We asked our male Day Hospice patients for ideas on where they would like to go on a ManBus outing.

Their suggestions ranged from visiting a stately home to practicing photography.

Three outings have taken place so far, including trips to the World’s End pub and Shoreham Airport, and I am pleased to say that the feedback we have received suggests that they have been a great success.

The ManBus service is open to anyone living in the St Barnabas catchment area (approximately from Southwick to Littlehampton and north to Steyning and Henfield) whose ability to engage in their community is limited due to living with an advanced illness.

To find out more about the ManBus project please contact Chris Lynch, voluntary services officer, on 01903 706360 or by emailing [email protected]
