Car fault prompts Southwick mum to alert drivers

A MUM-of-two is warning Vauxhall Zafira drivers to have their cars checked immediately after she discovered her model was at risk of catching fire.

In October, Vauxhall launched a probe into the Zafira after drivers complained that their cars spontaneously burst into flames.

Southwick resident, Kate Gieler, discovered her people carrier was also at risk after a relative saw an episode of BBC One’s Watchdog that investigated the fault.

Mrs Gieler said: “We were worried because it was secondhand information and we were about to go on holiday and drive a long distance.”

After making a few enquiries, Mrs Gieler discovered that her Zafira B (2005 to 2014) was one of the affected models.

She said: “We called our local Vauxhall dealer in Worthing and they said they could not book us in because they don’t have the parts yet.

“They just said don’t use the heating.”

After contacting Vauxhall directly, Mrs Gieler’s was able to book an appointment with her local dealer, Steeles of Worthing.

“Vauxhall said they’re not sure what’s causing it but they think it’s something to do with the fan motor and resister,” she said.

As a teacher, Mrs Gieler said she often sees Zafira owners doing the school run and is worried that many are still unaware of the major fault.

“I’m a supply teacher and go to different schools. When I see a Zafira I knock on their windows and tell them about the fault.

“They usually say yes I have, but I have spoken to two drivers last week who had no idea,” she said.

Vauxhall released a statement on their website, offering drivers a free inspection.

A spokesman for the manufacturer said: “Vauxhall will write to all affected Zafira owners to invite them for a free inspection of their vehicle’s heating and ventilation system and replace any parts necessary at no cost to the customer returning their vehicle to a safe operating condition.”

However, Mrs Gieler is yet to receive a letter from Vauxhall, which were promised to be sent out by November 12.

“I just want to spread awareness,” she added.
