FOOTBALLERS and supporters in Steyning are planning a Christmas to remember, following success at the Sussex Sports Awards.

Steyning Town Football Club’s annual Christmas Celebration will have a special significance this year, after the club was shortlisted for the The Grand Hotel Club of the Year.

General manager Carol Swain said: “Everyone involved with the football club is really proud to have made the shortlist for the Sussex Sports Awards’ Club of the Year award.”

They were up against two other clubs in the only category to be decided by public vote and eventually lost out to Shiverers Swimming Club in Hove.

Carol said: “The club, now Steyning Town Community FC following our merger with Steyning Strikers, won runner-up club of the year.

“Not bad considering only five years ago, it was about to be shut down due to bad debts and no future.”

There was more to celebrate at the Active Sussex awards evening, when John Brown was named Volunteer of the Year.

The club’s Christmas Celebration, with live first team football, will be held at the Shooting Field ground on Friday. Gates open at 6.45pm and kick off is 7.45pm. Entry is free. Festive fun includes Christmas carols and music, mulled wine and mince pies, a barbecue and roast chestnuts. There will also be a half-time Santa Dash.
