All the humour, excitement and magic of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland comes to life in Southwick next month.
Southwick Players are bringing the story to The Barn Theatre, in Southwick Street, from January 5 to 12.
The story will enchant children and adults alike and this adaptation, by Mike Carter, has already had well over 1,000 performances since its opening nigh.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was written by author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll and continues to be as popular today as it was when it was first published in 1865.
It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre, and its characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature.
On a golden afternoon young Alice is sitting under a tree reading a book when her mind starts to wander.
She sees a white rabbit, wearing a pocket watch, which appears to be in a hurry, then suddenly it disappears down a rabbit hole. Fascinated by this strange sight, she quickly follows the rabbit and tumbles into the burrow entering the merry, topsy-turvy world of Wonderland.
So begins the story of Alice and her bizarre adventures.
Memorable songs and whimsical escapades highlight Alice’s journey, which culminates in a madcap encounter with the Queen of Hearts and her army of playing cards. Will she get home? Not if the Queen of Hearts has her way.
Director Julian McDowell said : “WC Fields was often quoted as saying ‘You should never work with children or animals’.
“He continued ‘This production includes a rabbit, a hare, a dodo, a duck and, of course, a famous grinning cat and at least one mouse, together with a young and very talented chorus of cards and gardeners.
“I have to say that, contrary to Mr Fields’ advice, it has been a huge pleasure working with them all and I have been extremely fortunate to have such a talented group of actors for my directorial debut with The Southwick Players.”
The show is suitable for the whole family. Tickets are £8 and £12, depending on performance, with group discounts available. Performances begin at 7.30pm, with two Saturday matinées at 2.30pm.
