THE Herald's entertainment section the Scene has launched a new weekly feature on a local band who are looking to make it big.
This week it's Shoreham-based Absent Elk.

The band is made up of Ross Martin on guitars and piano/keyboards, Mike Hillman on guitar, Ric Wilson on drums; James Penhallow on bass guitar
and Kjetil Morland on lead vocals.

Ross, Mike, Ric and James are all from Shoreham while Kjetil is from Norway.

The band have already supported The Script, The Hoosiers, Girls Aloud and Das Pop and released their first single, Sun and Water, in May.

Guitar and keyboard player Ross Martin said: "We're feeling hopeful that
people are going to like the song and lucky that we are now in a position to potentially get our music heard by a lot of people.

"We deliberately chose Sun and Water as our first single, because we hope it says the right things about what we are as a band right from the beginning."

Ross, Mike and Ric have been playing together since they were at King's Manor Community College in Shoreham with James joining shortly after.

By 2005, Kjetil was studying at Kingston University in London and his
girlfriend was from Shoreham.

She knew Ross, Mike, Ric and James and the band first met Kjetil at The Red Lion beer festival.

After chatting music over some strange-coloured ales, they headed straight to a rehearsal room for a drunken jam.

They clicked immediately, and played their first gig just a few weeks later at the Beach Dreams Festival in Shoreham.

The band were signed by Sony BMG (RCA) last year and hit the road with one of the country's most successful girl bands last month after their cover of Girls Aloud's The Loving Kind became a YouTube hit, getting more than 50,000 views in a matter of days.

The band will be returning to their roots when they play at the Beach
Dreams Festival at Beach Green, Shoreham, on Saturday, June 13. They are
also set to start their first national headlining tour.
