WORTHING-born artist Daniel Fermor-Smith moved to Spain five years ago to develop his painting.
He ended up in Antequera, the ancient capital of Andalucia, a beautiful town with many similarities to Arundel, both historically and geographically.
He is now thrilled to return for the first British exhibition – at Prospekt Art, Tarrant Street, Arundel – of his dynamic and exciting work, which has already received universal acclaim, selling to collectors worldwide.
The title of the exhibition explains the evolution of his work, which comprises dramatic early studies in acrylic, ravishing and colourful Rajasthan pictures inspired by his travels in India and more recent oils revealing in graphic and perceptive detail the mores, the people, the animals and the landscapes of Spain.
"Painting for me is fundamentally about expression, whether it be a bid to make some observation or social commentary or to provoke a reaction through a more aesthetic, focused picture," he said.
He can, however, be caught in a more reflective and sentimental mood – "a good picture is a homage to nature, a window onto life".
Whether you prefer landscapes or more figurative studies, there is something for everyone in his latest show running until July 20, where he looks forward to meetings friends, old and new.
His paintings of musicians will be complemented at the preview on July 3, 5.30pm to 8.30pm, by lyrical Spanish guitar music from 15-year-old Sam Brown, one of Bognor's most outstanding young musicians.
Sam attends the Regis School of Music and, as well as playing the guitar, he is also a talented composer and he hopes to make music his career.
